Ocean Spray Recalls Craisins Due to Metal Fragment Concerns
Ocean Spray will voluntarily recall certain production lots of Original Flavor Craisins because of the possible presence of small hair-like metal fragments, the company announced Monday.
The company added in a press release that the dried cranberry product Craisins recalled in five-, 10- and 48-ounce and 10-pound packages were unlikely to cause any harm to consumers. According to the release, Ocean Spray has not received any consumer complaints about the products involved in the recall, and no other Ocean Spray products have been affected.
The announcement comes immediately following Thanksgiving, when cranberry sauce is a staple for many family dinners across the United States.
Ocean Spray spokesman John Isaf told IBTimes in an email that the company discovered the problem after it experienced a malfunction on a piece of equipment on the production line at a manufacturing facility in Markham, Wash.
We've identified the source of the problem and corrective maintenance has been performed on the equipment, and additional preventative maintenance and inspections have been instituted throughout our network, Isaf said.
Isaf did not specify the total amount of cranberries recalled or affected. He said it was very small, less than one-quarter of one percent of the total pounds of dried cranberries the company produces on a yearly basis. He said the recall mostly affects states in the western region of the U.S., but didn't identify which states. UK versions were not affected.
Ocean Spray issued the voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of our consumers, the release read.
The company urged consumers who purchased the affected products to destroy them, save the UPC label and best-by date and contact the company's consumer hotline at (800) 662-3263.
In February 2009, Ocean Spray announced a voluntary recall of certain lots of its Fruit and Nut Trail Mix products due to an expanded recall of peanuts from the Peanut Corporation of America. That recall dealt with fears of salmonella.
