Official PlayStation 5 Specs Reveal Sony's Biggest PlayStation Ever
KEY POINTS
• With the revelation of the official PlayStation 5 specifications, they have just confirmed that this will indeed be the largest console to date from Sony
• Despite its size, the PS5 still isn't the heaviest PlayStation produced ever as the PlayStation 3 weighed 11 pounds or 5 kilograms at launch
• Space-conscious gamers who are thinking of buying both a PlayStation 5 and an Xbox Series X will need to clear space for both next-gen consoles this holiday season
Sony has revealed through official specifications that the coming PlayStation 5 will be the largest console ever from the PlayStation family.
As suspected by many fans since the unit was first revealed in 2019, the PS5 will be an absolutely massive system and prospective buyers will have to consider that when purchasing the unit that is scheduled to launch on Nov. 12, Polygon reports.
The PlayStation Blog published the official dimensions of both the standard PlayStation 5 as well as the Digital Edition that does not come with a built-in disc drive:
PLAYSTATION 5
- Width: 15.35 inches (390 mm)
- Depth: 10.23 inches (260 mm)
- Height: 4.09 inches (104 mm)
PLAYSTATION 5 DIGITAL EDITION
- Width: 15.35 inches (390 mm)
- Depth: 10.23 inches (260 mm)
- Height: 3.62 inches (92 mm)
Those listed dimensions do not factor in the size of the included base, which will give the PS5 a larger footprint when standing upright.
Despite weighing in a 9.92 pounds of 4.5 kilograms, the PlayStation 5 actually is not the heaviest PlayStation yet to be produced. That distinction still belongs to the PlayStation 3, which weighed 11 pounds or 5 kilograms when it launched.
As 8.60 pounds or 3.9 kilograms, the PS5 Digital Edition is just slightly lighter than its sibling.
Space-conscious gamers who are thinking of buying both a PlayStation 5 and an Xbox Series X will need to clear a lot of space for the next-gen consoles this holiday season. The Xbox Series X measures 5.94 inches wide, 5.94 inches deep, and 11.85 inches high (15.1 cm by 15.1 cm by 30.1 cm). It weighs in at 9.81 pounds (4.45 kilograms).
Microsoft patrons have a lighter, less space-consuming option though in the Xbox Series S. At 10.8 inches (275 mm) tall, 5.9 inches (151 mm) deep, and 2.5 inches (63.5mm) wide when vertical, it is almost 60% smaller than the Xbox Series X.
Pre-orders have already begun for the PlayStation 5 at various retailers and it would seem that the size and weight of the system are not discouraging rabid gamers from still staking their claim on Sony’s next monster.
