Ohio Cops Called To ‘Tackle’ Children Playing Football In Street End Up Joining Them In The Game [Video]
Deputies with the Shaker Heights Police Department in Ohio were called to "tackle" a group of young boys playing football on the street. The cops, however, couldn’t help but join the youngsters in the game.
A video clip of the officers hanging blithely with a group of predominantly African-American boys was shared on Instagram on Saturday (June 20) by Wendy Brown, a parent.
“A #Karen called the police on my kids for playing football in the street,” Brown wrote in the caption. "#shakerpolicedepartment pulled up and joined in on the game. Thank you for letting the kids be kids!"
Speaking to Fox 8, Brown said one of the police officers told her he also used to play in the street as a young boy.
“I don’t know the cop’s name, but he came to me and said ‘I don’t know who would do it, but someone called police on the kids, they said they were playing in the street so we came by.’ And he said ‘we used to play in the street as kids.'”
“We encourage them to go outside and just be kids, so they were just playing football out in the street like they do any other time,” Brown explained.
The video comes at a time when police officers are being criticized for use of force against people, especially the Black community. After viewing the video, people were praising the responding officers, with some even wishing if all cops were like them.
As of Friday, Brown’s Instagram post racked up over 26,000 likes, with a number of people saying they enjoy the sight of children frolicking in the street.
Officer Joe DiLillo, a 15-year veteran with South Euclid police, told Fox 8 that he often picks up a game of basketball with young boys, as seen in Brown’s video.
“They recognized me, I recognized them and they asked me to come out of the car and talk with them a little bit rub elbows, and then join them in a game of basketball which I was happy to do,” he said, referring to the kids.
"If we didn’t have the three gentlemen that came over to check on them, it could’ve gone way worse,” Brown noted.
