A 23-year-old graduate student from Ohio State University was killed in a freak accident after her head got wedged between her car door and an exit toll booth in a parking garage on Monday night.
According to a statement released by the Columbus Police Department, the accident happened just after 11:30 p.m. as Victoria Strauss was leaving a parking deck in Downtown Columbus.
The incident was captured on security cameras in the garage, said a report from The Columbus Dispatch. The surveillance footage shows Strauss dropping her credit card while attempting to pay for her parking. When she reaches down to pick it up, the car inadvertently accelerates and collides with the parking kiosk, causing her head to become trapped between the vehicle and the machine. Authorities believe she accidentally stepped on the accelerator.
A security guard found Strauss unresponsive at around 5:40 a.m. on Tuesday and called the police. The guard was urged to perform CPR on her while waiting for the paramedics to arrive. However, she was already dead.
"Strauss died as a result of her collision with the kiosk and was pronounced at the scene. No one else was involved," the statement read. "CPD's Accident Investigation Unit responded and initiated an investigation which is ongoing."
Strauss was a graduate student in the College of Social Work. "We were heartbroken to learn she passed away on Monday, and we extend our deepest sympathy to her family and friends during this difficult time," a spokesperson from the university said.
Before joining Ohio State University, Strauss attended Florida Atlantic University, where she was a member of the competitive cheer and dance team.
Last year, Santa Monica, California, also witnessed a shocking parking garage accident when a 20-year-old man accidentally drove his car off a six-story parking garage. According to the police, the man suffered critical non-visible injuries in the 60-foot fall despite initially being able to communicate with the officers.
In another incident, a woman lost her life after being accidentally run over by her husband while parking his car. The woman, who got down from the vehicle to help her husband park the car, was standing in front of the vehicle when he ran over her.
