'Old Town Road' Helps 4-Year-Old Boy With Nonverbal Autism Find Voice [WATCH]
You can add music therapy to the list of accomplishments that “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X has achieved.
The crossover hit by the rapper made it to the top of the charts and started debates about the definition of country music. The song, which combines elements of rap and country, earned fame after being used on global video sharing app Tik Tok as a meme. The song then proceeded to gain millions of fans, with people everywhere singing along to the hit single. Is the song so strong that it inspired a 4-year-old boy with autism, who can barely speak, to sing? Apparently, yes it is.
Sherletta Brundidge from Cottage Grove, Minnesota, recently tweeted a snippet of a video showing her son humming and singing the tune. Her son, Daniel, is 4 years old and has autism, and for the most part, does not talk.
“We had an #oldtownroad miracle at my house. My son Daniel has #autism and doesn’t talk. We caught him humming the @LilNasX and @billyraycyrus tune the other day. Then Bless God, my baby started singing the song on his own. His therapists have started to use it in his sessions!” she wrote.
The video went viral and even caught the attention of the two artists behind the song. Country legend Billy Ray Cyrus retweeted the video. Rapper Lil Nas X also retweeted it and wrote, “what a king.”
Brundidge, 47, told Pioneer Press that she and her husband Shawn, 53, have four children: Andrew, 12, Brandon, 6, Cameron, 5, and Daniel, 4.
The three youngest were all diagnosed with autism and Brundidge said that Daniel, in particular, struggled. The 4-year-old took six months to learn the letter A, and is considered to be non-verbal.
Brundidge was shocked when her youngest started humming the song while she was cleaning their kitchen.
“He starts humming. I’m like ‘Am I a crackhead or is he humming ‘Old Town Road?’ Then he started singing the lyrics,” she recalled
Brundidge then texted her husband to come to the kitchen as she was extremely overwhelmed by what was happening
“I started crying. The tears were coming down and landing on his head. He started patting the top of his head. It was just full of slobber and snot and tears because I couldn’t stop crying. We’ve been praying for this boy since he went down. This is an answer to my prayers.” she stated
