Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Warned Jadon Sancho Signing Might Not Be Enough For Manchester United
KEY POINTS
- Jadon Sancho and Manchester United are reported to have agreed on a five-year transfer deal
- Sancho's signing might not be enough to make Man Utd contenders for next season
- Manchester United will play against Lask on Wednesday on the second leg of the Europa League last-16
Manchester United is reported to be close to agreeing on a five-year, $106 million-deal with Borussia Dortmund and its star winger Jadon Sancho.
The impending blockbuster deal could mark a successful pursuit of the club’s top transfer target. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is warned that acquiring the rising prodigy alone may not be enough to turn the Red Devils into instant contenders next season.
Sancho may be gifted with top-notch skills and attributes, but the 19-year-old’s unmatched talent would still have to be surrounded by the right supporting cast that would complement his game, according to Jamie Jackson of the Guardian.
“Jadon Sancho has 11 England caps. He was in the Bundesliga team of the season at 19. He makes in-game decisions as prescient as a teenage Wayne Rooney. He is a two-footed, goalscoring assist maker with a Harry Houdini array of tricks,” Jackson wrote.
“Yet if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pursuit of the Borussia Dortmund forward is not backed by further transfers then Manchester United have only a distant hope of being contenders next season.”
Based on the report, Dortmund would prefer to complete the deal with United by next week as the German club goes on a search for a replacement for Sancho, who is set to be the most expensive English player in history by virtue of the said agreement.
Apart from the mentioned $106-million price that would be split into three yearly installments, Sancho would likewise be entitled to about $21 million on performance-related add-ons.
“It is understood that Sancho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s key target, will earn about £250,000 a week – a significant improvement on the five-year contract he signed at Dortmund in August 2019,” Jackson wrote in a separate report.
Although he is considered a rare gem, Sancho, who scored 17 league goals and issued 16 assists last season, is still expected to earn his way through Solskjaer’s attacking rotation where Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Mason Greenwood are also fighting for their respective spots.
Manchester United is set to face Lask on Wednesday on the second leg of the Europa League last-16 where Solskjaer’s side is holding a 5-0 edge.
