Olivia Rodrigo has denied speculations that the lyrics of her hit single, “Drivers License,” are about Sabrina Carpenter and her alleged relationship with Joshua Bassett.

The lyrics in question read: “And you’re probably with that blonde girl/Who always made me doubt/She’s so much older than me/She’s everything I’m insecure about.”

In an interview with Variety, Rodrigo said she did not expect the lyrics of her song to cause such a stir. “I put it out knowing that it would get that reaction, so it was really strange when it did,” she said, adding: "I just remember everyone being so weird and speculative about stuff they had no idea about.”

Asked to set the record straight about rumors that the song was about her love triangle with Sabrina and Bassett, Rodrigo said: “I don’t really subscribe to hating other women because of boys. I think that’s so stupid, and I really resent that narrative that was being tossed around.”

Bassett and Rodrigo co-starred in “High School Musical: The Musical — The Series,” in which they played on-screen couple, Nini and Rocky. Carpenter, on the other hand, is a fellow Disney alumnus who starred in “Girl Meets World.”

Bassett and Rodrigo were rumored to be dating in 2020. While they never confirmed their relationship, dating rumors continued after a video of Rodrigo talking about “practicing driving” with Bassett before getting her license surfaced. In the video, she described the experience as a trip she would “always remember.”

Meanwhile, Rodrigo went on to talk about her friendship with her idol Taylor Swift. “It’s so nice to be welcomed into the music industry and so great to be supportive of other women,” she said.

“She wrote me a letter a while ago, and she wrote something about how you make your own luck in the world, and how you treat other people always comes back to you.”

The "Sour" singer also dished on crossing paths with fellow Disney star Selena Gomez, whom she described as “so kind.” She said she and the “Ice Cream” singer talked about prioritizing mental health, saying they both think it’s important in the industry.

“All of us were in the limelight very young and that can be taxing on your psyche and can bring about all these weird issues,” Rodrigo added.
