Actress Olivia Wilde has always been an advocate of LGBT rights and so was her movies. However, netizens now believe she is homophobic after a fan brought one of her past interviews to light with a screenshot on Twitter.
In the first interview, the 37-year-old actress discussed her career and how she moved into directing projects. "I almost feel like someone who has come out of the closet," the tweet quoted. "There’s this feeling of honesty about what I really want to do, and it’s a level of comfort from being true to yourself that I haven’t felt in a long time."
In the second interview extract, Wilde noted that after she dated a couple of men, all she wanted was "a soft kind of lesbian relationship, just gentle kissing and scissoring."
The Twitter user said alongside her post: "I have always respected Olivia Wilde but when it comes down to this, it’s terrible."
The tweet quickly went viral on Twitter and received divided opinions in the comments section. While many people noted that Wilde's choice of words might be insensitive and she needs to apologize, others straight away labeled her as homophobic for invalidating the LGBTQ+ experience.
Many fans supported Wilde following the resurfaced interview quotes. One user wrote thus: "I see nothing disrespectful. *Hell ya* she wanted to be herself in her acting and directing and finally being able to be true to herself was something she likened to coming out. What's wrong with that? Coming out is a moment of Freedom. She felt a similar freedom."
However, some people didn't like how the actress compared changing her career path with coming out of the closet.
Another user pointed out and wrote, "Cus its as if she is saying coming out of the closet is as easy as switching career paths from an *aCtre$S* to a *dir3CToR* as a privileged white woman in Hollywood. it undermines the STRUGGLE & CONSEQUENCES lgbtq+ folk face when coming out... something she will never experience."
"This is the same Olivia Wilde who y’all are calling homophobic," a fan captioned another interview of the actress in which she reflected on a discussion with lesbian writers.
The fan further noted that "instead of putting her on blast and trending her name... maybe just educate her." This user agreed that making comparisons wasn't the best thing to do but this kind of reaction is unnecessary. "The LGBTQ+ is dealing with so much shit right now yet you choose to waist your time on stuff like this," the user added.
