The United States is consistently the most dominant country during the Summer Olympics, and that trend is expected to continue in Tokyo. If any nation takes home more gold medals than the U.S., it will be considered a major upset.
The USA is a heavy favorite to win the most gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics with -700 odds, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. China is the biggest threat to the U.S. with +600 odds.
Only the USA and China are viewed as realistic options to win the most golds. Japan is third with +3400 odds. Russia and Great Britain are tied at +5000. Canada, New Zealand and Germany are among a dozen countries that are +10000 long shots.
The U.S. women are significant favorites to win gold in basketball, soccer and softball. The U.S. men’s basketball team remains a heavy favorite to earn a fourth straight gold medal, despite their struggles in exhibition games.
USA gymnast Simon Biles is a favorite to win multiple medals after winning four golds at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. Swimmer Katie Ledecky has five Olympic gold medals on her resume.
When it comes to total medals, the USA isn’t expected to be challenged. The U.S. is an overwhelming -1500 favorite to win the most bronze, silver and gold medals combined. China is a distant second with +1100 odds, followed by Russia at +2500.
The USA led the Rio Olympic Games with 121 total medals and 46 gold medals. China finished second with 70 total medals, while it was Great Britain that had the second-most gold medals with 27.
At the 2012 London Olympics, the USA finished first with 104 medals and 46 golds. China was second with 88 total medals and 38 gold medals.
The USA was first again at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with 110 total medals, but it was the host nation that had the most first-place finishes. China won 51 golds, compared to the USA’s 36.
The USA ranks first all time with 2,828 total medals and 1,127 gold medals combined at the Summer and Winter Games.
