ONE Championship News: Atomweight Standouts Reveal Dream Grand Prix Opponent
KEY POINTS
- Jihin Radzuan and Jenelyn Olsim are keen on facing Ritu Phogat if the chance arises
- The pair will square off at ONE: NextGen II for a chance at being an alternate in the Grand Prix
- Phogat will fight Itsuki Hirata in the semifinals at ONE: NextGen on October 29
Jihin Radzuan and Jenelyn Olsim both revealed that they would be interested in facing renowned wrestler Ritu Phogat in the ONE Women's Atomweight World Grand Prix if the opportunity arises.
Speaking to the media via video call, the pair shared why they both chose "The Indian Tigress."
“It’s very hard to say [because] I’m not a very picky type of person like whoever I [face] you know, the fight, I will accept it. I think I would like to go against Ritu Phogat because she’s a wrestler, so we’ll see how it goes,” Radzuan remarked.
The Malaysian is coming off a resounding victory over Bi Nguyen in December 2020, a fighter that Olsim had also defeated in August of this year.
Meanwhile, Olsim stressed that she would want to face Phogat because it would allow her to test her skills on the ground against one of the strongest wrestlers in the division.
The Team Lakay heroine would be facing Radzuan at ONE: NextGen II on Friday, November 12, with the winner being an alternate for the ONE Women's Atomweight World Grand Prix in case a fighter goes down due to injury.
However, both are not selfish enough to wish injury on any of the competitors as they recognize that the four women in the semis have put in the work to deserve their spots.
Phogat is currently slated to face Japanese grappler Itsuki Hirata, while Thailand’s Stamp Fairtex will be facing Julie Mezabarba of Brazil in the semifinals.
She recently acknowledged Hirata’s strengths as a grappler but also claimed that “Android 18” does not have the ability to make her tap out.
It is worth noting that Olsim picked Stamp and Phogat to come out of their respective matchups, while Radzuan also went for the Thai but chose Hirata to come out on top in her fight with the Indian.
The semifinals of the tourney serve as the co-main events of ONE: NextGen. The card will be streaming live on the official ONE Super App and the official ONE YouTube channel in Asia on October 29 at 8:30 PM Singapore Standard Time (SGT).
Meanwhile, the American audience can watch the entire event via B/R Live on Friday, October 29 at 8:30 AM ET.
