Users have been complaining about the “jelly scrolling” issue on the OnePlus 5’s display, and OnePlus has now come out with an official statement. The company says that this is not a defect and is “natural” behavior for the AMOLED display.

“The OnePlus 5 uses the same high-quality components as all OnePlus devices, including the AMOLED display,” OnePlus said. “We’ve received feedback from a small number of users saying that at times they notice a subtle visual effect when scrolling. This is natural and there’s no variance in screens between devices.”

OnePlus 5 owners have been complaining about this jelly-like effect on their device’s screen on various forums. The unwanted visual effect stretches out the content on the screen while users scroll and squeezes back when it stops. It appears as though the contents on the screen is bouncing or wiggling, hence why it’s being called jelly scrolling.

Now that OnePlus has issued an official statement saying that this is not a defect, it goes without saying that the company will not be issuing a fix through an OTA software update. It would be completely understandable that some OnePlus 5 users will feel frustrated over this considering that this jelly screen effect is undesired by most, if not all users affected.

There’s still no accurate information as to why this is happening to some OnePlus 5 units. Several theories have already been thrown out, including the possibility that the AMOLED display on some units might have been mounted upside down.

However, a teardown by YouTube channel JerryRigEverything may have derailed that ongoing theory. As pointed out by the XDA Developers site, the teardown of the OnePlus 5 showed that its main internal components are positioned on the bottom of the device.

It is likely that the jelly effect on the display can be considered as “natural” behavior if the positioning of the components was indeed causing it. This might be the reason why OnePlus is saying that this isn’t a defect because the company chose to design the device in this manner.

It’s possible that OnePlus decided to place most of the main internal components on the bottom of the device to make room for the dual cameras on top. All things considered, this can’t be considered a manufacturing defect if OnePlus decided to design the device in this manner.

This isn’t actually the first time that OnePlus has gotten away with some sort of display issue. Back in 2014, the OnePlus One’s display had a common problem where a yellow tint is present at the bottom part of its display. The company never provided a fixe for its, nor did it have units repaired under warranty, as pointed out by Android Police.

For those who are not affected by this display issue on their OnePlus 5 unit, they can consider themselves lucky. Unfortunately for everyone else, they would either have to get used to seeing this jelly effect, or just have it returned to OnePlus. Users can return their OnePlus 5 units within 15 days after purchasing.
