OnePlus 5 Leaked Retail Box Confirms Dual Cameras
A new leaked image of what appears to be the retail package of the OnePlus 5 has surfaced, and it confirms one of the upcoming smartphones’s key features. The box for the OnePlus 5 comes with the tagline “Dual Camera. Clearer Photos.”
The leaked retail packaging was shared by the folks over at Android Authority. The site’s source says that the “Dual Camera. Clearer Photos” label is the official tagline of the OnePlus 5. Another one of the site’s sources also says that “Focus on what matters” will also be used as another marketing phrase for the handset, but OnePlus’s “Never Settle” will also still remain.
The leaked retail packaging also arrives right after OnePlus opened a poll on Weibo where fans can vote on the design of the device’s final retail packaging.
OnePlus has been teasing the OnePlus 5’s camera performance on its various social media pages over the last couple of weeks. The Chinese phone maker even confirmed that it was collaborating with DxO to improve the OP5’s camera performance.
Most recently, OnePlus also published a side-by-side image teasing the OnePlus 5’s camera performance. Although the company didn’t give out any specifics, the image it shared hints that the smartphone’s camera will perform well even in low-lighting conditions.
Two Sensors? Two Different Lenses?
There have been conflicting rumors and speculations about the OnePlus 5’s rear-facing camera. The majority is adamant that the phone will have dual cameras, while a minority believes that it will still have a single camera on the back.
With the latest leak, it now looks as that a dual-camera setup for the OnePlus 5 has been confirmed. The popular theory that’s going around is that the dual cameras will have one RGB (color) image sensor and one monochrome (B&W) sensor.
If true, this will be similar to what Huawei has done with its P9 and P10 Android smartphones. Other phone makers simply placed two different kinds of lenses for their respective smartphones.
For example, Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus comes with one regular camera lens, while the other is equipped with a telephoto zoom lens. Another example is the LG G6’s dual cameras which feature one regular lens, and another with a wide-angle lens.
Since OnePlus appears to be targeting “Clearer Photos” for the OP5, it seems very likely that it will use the RGB/monochrome sensor combo. This kind of setup improves image quality by combining the colored photo with the B&W photo for getting proper exposure (lighting).
Thinner Phone. Smaller Battery?
The leaked retail packaging for the OnePlus 5 was also followed by another leak stating that the handset will feature a 3,300 mAh battery, as reported by Phone Arena. If this is accurate, this would mean that the OP5 will have a smaller battery than the OnePlus 3T, which comes with a 3,400 mAh battery.
With that in mind, this also seems to be inline with what OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said recently about the OnePlus 5’s thinness. “I believe the OnePlus 5 is the thinnest flagship phone, and it does not sacrifice experience,” Lau said on the Chinese social media site Weibo.
If that’s the case, cutting down the battery capacity might have been one of the ways of making the OnePlus 5 as thin as possible. It’s also being speculated that the OP5 might not come with a headphone jack, which takes up 3.5mm of space on smartphones. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei had this to say regarding the headphone jack:
An alleged leaked poster has implied that the OnePlus 5 might launch on June 15. The poster carries the DxO logo and the phrase “Hello 5.” OnePlus hasn’t given an official launch date for its 2017 flagship just yet.
So far, the only specification that the company has confirmed for the OnePlus 5 is that it will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 SoC, the same chipset powering the Samsung Galaxy S8.
