OnePlus 6T Announced With Smaller Notch, In-Display Fingerprint Sensor
The OnePlus 6T has officially been announced and it’s basically the OnePlus 6 with a couple of upgrades. One of the biggest changes on the OnePlus 6T is the addition of a fingerprint scanner underneath its display.
The OnePlus 6T comes with a slightly larger 6.41-inch AMOLED display. The Chinese phone maker was able to add the bigger screen by slimming down the bottom chin and implementing a “water drop” notch on top. Because of the smaller notch, OnePlus had to remove the notification LED light, while the earpiece speaker is now located on top of the front-facing camera module.
The most talked about new feature on the OnePlus 6T is the in-display fingerprint scanner. OnePlus claims that it’s the fastest in-display reader in the market with an unlock time of 0.34 seconds, as reported by Android Authority. The only problem with this technology is that some screen protectors might affect the performance of the sensor. Fortunately, the OnePlus 6T will have a compatible screen protector installed straight out of the box.
Inside, the base model of the OnePlus 6T is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. This is another bit of improvement from the previous generation, which arrived earlier this year with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There’s also a model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and an 8GB RAM model with 256GB of storage.
The OnePlus 6T comes with the same dual cameras that are found on the OnePlus 6. It’s still the same 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel sensors with f/1.7 aperture lenses, according to The Verge. The 16MP camera also has optical images stabilization and electronic image stabilization.
OnePlus has upgraded the software of the cameras on the 6T with better HDR and portrait modes. There’s also new studio lighting modes that can automatically adjust lighting and recognize people’s faces. For low-light photography, OnePlus is including a new feature called Nightscape Mode. This new night mode will also be added to the OnePlus 6 through a software update.
Although OnePlus added a lot of new stuff to the 6T to make it a compelling product that’s different enough from the OnePlus 6, the company removed one important thing: the 3.5mm headphone jack. The move may annoy a lot of wired headphone enthusiasts, but it allowed the company to include a larger 3,700mAh battery and a better resonance chamber to make the speaker louder. The OnePlus 6T will also include a USB Type-C to 3.5mm headphone jack dongle in the box.
On the software side of things, the OnePlus 6T is running Android 9.0 Pie along with the latest version of OxygenOS. Users can expect to get better gesture-based navigation control and an updated gaming mode. There’s also the new Smart Boost mode, which will deliver faster app launch times.
OnePlus has partnered with T-Mobile to bring the OnePlus 6T to the United States. The 8GB/128GB model will be available from T-Mobile stores starting from Nov. 5, while the other variants will be sold from OnePlus and other retailers. The 6T will also work for CDMA carriers like Verizon.
So, how much is the OnePlus 6T? The 6GB/128GB model will be sold for $549, the same price as the 6GB/64GB variant of the OnePlus 6. The 8GB/128GB model will sell for $579, while the 8GB/256GB will sell for $629.
