OnePlus Explains Why OnePlus 6 Doesn’t Have Wireless Charging
The OnePlus 6 is one of the best flagship Android smartphones today, but it’s missing a feature that most flagships have. The OnePlus 6 doesn’t have wireless charging and the company has revealed that it didn’t feel like adding it in the first place.
When Business Insider asked OnePlus representatives why the OnePlus 6 doesn’t have wireless charging, they said that “we don’t really feel the need to add wireless charging. We’re not going to add a feature just for the sake of it.” This may be a non-issue to a lot of users, but it can be viewed by some as a missed opportunity for the company.
That being said, wireless charging is a neat feature that brings a level of convenience to users. Users will only have to place their smartphone on a charging pad and they won’t have to struggle with wires and charging bricks to juice up their devices. However, the technology does bring some issues with it.
If users want to take advantage of the technology, they would have to buy a wireless charging pad since it’s not included in the smartphone packaging. Another problem with the technology is that it’s not as fast as traditional wired charging methods. In an age when fast charging is already in the mainstream, some users might feel that wireless charging is simply unnecessary.
Last year, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau talked about wireless charging and why the company chose not to include it on the OnePlus 5T. Lau discussed the limitations of the technology and why it’s sticking to Dash Charge.
“An attractive promise of wireless charging is that you can just set your phone down on a surface and charge. Nice in theory, but not as simple in reality. You can’t pick up your phone to game or take a photo while charging,” Lau explained. “Given present-day infrastructures, wireless charging brings more limitations than freedom. Wireless charging pads, cases, tables, and lamps – these all add up if you want to charge on the go or outfit your home for true convenience, creating constraints for the user.”
The OnePlus 6 also comes with a starting price of $529. That’s a lot cheaper than most flagship Android phones today and it’s one of the reasons why consumers prefer OnePlus phones. If the OnePlus 6 included wireless charging, it may have also made the phone a bit more expensive than it already is.
The OnePlus 6 is undoubtedly one of the best Android flagship phones right now and its lack of wireless charging doesn’t change that. Nevertheless, the company is open to bringing the technology “when the time is right.” Perhaps if more users ask for it, the company might include it in the OnePlus 6T later this year, as per GSM Arena.
