Orca Hunts Dolphins, Rams Into Sea Creature Mid-Air, Incredible Video Shows
A group of boaters out at sea were shocked to see an orca pod hunting dolphins in Baja California Sur, Mexico.
The images and videos taken by the boaters were shared on social media. A video, captured by Miguel Cuevas, shows the moment a dolphin is sent flying through the air as a charging killer whale rams into it. The video was also posted by Cabo Pulmo Divers on Facebook.
"What an amazing moment!" Cabo Pulmo Divers wrote on Facebook.
People on the boats that were near the scene were amazed by the animals colliding mid-air. The videos shared on social media were viewed by more than 80,000 people. One of the videos, shared by @rivaldo_castro17, shows an orca swimming behind the boat.
According to USA Today, some researchers tried to obtain more information about the encounter and found there was another Instagram post containing underwater footage of the orcas' pursuit of the dolphins.
Cuevas told USA Today's For The Win Outdoors that he counted “at least 10 orcas,” all females. He added the incident lasted several hours. Cuevas estimated the height of the leap to be “four to five meters.”
Orcas, also known as killer whales, have been known to hunt marine mammals and mobula rays, which are abundant in the gulf.
Last month, a footage emerged showing the moment a swimmer came close to two killer whales. Steve Morris was taking a dip in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand when he experienced what he called the "best day of my life." "It was pretty much the best day of my life this morning. The encounter was epic, something I've dreamed about ever since I started swimming," he told LadBible at the time. "The orca were extremely close, barely a metre away. I have never seen this face to face interaction before but I have dreamt about it. ... At first when I saw the two break away from the rest of the pod it was a bit unnerving. But when I realized they had just come to say hello, I just enjoyed the experience."
