Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya already hinted at a possible reason why Kovalev could beat Canelo.

This November, Mexican boxing superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is set to face a much bigger opponent Sergey Kovalev of Russia. Ahead of the fight, Canelo’s promoter De La Hoya kind of went a bit sarcastic about Kovalev’s physical advantages over his fighter.

In a recent interview with DAZN, De La Hoya commented on the talked-about Canelo vs, Kovalev fight. The boxing Hall of Famer commended Canelo’s courage to move two division higher just to face Kovalev.

"It’s a dangerous fight. It’s a bold move from Canelo, but that’s why Canelo is Canelo. That’s why people love Canelo. That’s why Canelo is boxing’s face,” De La Hoya stated.

With regards to the outcome of the fight, De La Hoya did his job as a promoter and teased the fans. However, De La Hoya emphasized Kovalev’s size advantage over Canelo in a way that kind of suggested that Kovalev would only win because of it.

“Come Nov. 2, will we see history in the making, or will we see Kovalev walking through Canelo because of his height, his weight, and his power?," De La Hoya said.

Even though it’s quite evident that Kovalev has the size advantage, surely, there are other ways to promote a fight, especially for a promoter like De La Hoya.

Whether De La Hoya meant it or not, one thing is for sure, his relationship with Canelo remains strong. In an interview with LA Times, the Golden Boy boss insisted that rumors about he and Canelo having a bit of a dent in their relationship aren’t true.

“People were trying to sabotage our dealings and our relationship but there were no surprises. We’re still Golden Boy and at the end of the day we get what we want,” De La Hoya said.

De La Hoya even noted that “sabotage” are just normal as long as Canelo is with Golden Boy. As the promoter of a world-famous boxer, De La Hoya is always open for controversies.

“That’s what happens when you’re the biggest athlete in the sport and making the most money. You have a target on your back and as a promoter you get the backlash. Everybody wants to sabotage our relationship but everything is fine.” De La Hoya exclaimed.

Meanwhile, De La Hoya also confirmed that the much awaited Canelo vs. Golovkin 3 is targeted for 2020. As per De La Hoya, Gennady Golovkin deserves the fight and the fans really want to see the fight as well.
