Oscar Snubs 2018: The Movies And Actors Ignored By The Academy Awards
Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis announced the 2018 Academy Award nominations early Tuesday morning in Beverly Hills, California, but the Oscars can’t honor everyone. The Academy overlooked several films and artists. These are the biggest Oscar snubs of 2018:
Jessica Chastain — “Molly’s Game,” which follows the true story of an Olympic-class skier who was arrested for running a high-stakes poker game, scored a nod for adapted screenplay. However, Chastain’s performance as Molly was not honored.
James Franco — While Franco scored nominations at the Golden Globes and SAGs, he did not get nominated for an Oscar. “The Disaster Artist” has only one nomination for adapted screenplay. The recent sexual assault allegations against him could have affected the votes resulting in the snub.
“Wonder Woman” — The one of biggest films of last year, beloved by critics and fans, was completely snubbed by the Oscars. No directing nomination for “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins. No production design nomination for Aline Bonetto, who helped build the world of Themyscira. There wasn’t even a costume design nomination honoring Lindy Hemming for all the World War II period costumes and Amazonian armor.
Armie Hammer — Though his “Call Me By Your Name” co-star Timothée Chalamet is up for best actor, Hammer was missing from the supporting actor category. He played Chalamet’s lover in the coming-of-age film.
Hong Chau — “Downsizing,” the story of a couple who decides to shrink down to five inches tall and join a new experimental community, wasn’t nominated much during the current awards season, but Chau was clearly a standout. She was nominated for best supporting actress at both the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, but the Oscars snubbed her.
“Battle of the Sexes” — Last year’s best actress winner Emma Stone isn’t nominated, and her film about the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs scored zero nominations.
While these snubbed actors and films won’t be making acceptance speeches at the Academy Awards, plenty of others will. Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” leads with 13 nominations. “Lady Bird,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “Get Out” also scored several nods each. Check out all the nominations on the Oscars website.
The 2018 Oscars air Sunday, March 4 on ABC.
