Bong Joon-Ho’s South Korean dark comedy “Parasite” dominated the 92nd Annual Academy Awards and secured four victories at the star-studded event. The movie became the first non-English language film to take the Best Picture trophy. The film did not only dominate the ceremony, but it also lit up social media during the awards show.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, when the whole cast and crew went up the stage to give the acceptance speech for the top prize, it became the most tweeted moment of the night. Social media platforms like Twitter were filled with photos and videos of the iconic moment when Joon-Ho and the producers took the stage to get their hands on the coveted trophy.
Apart from winning the biggest accolade for the night, Joon-Ho’s movie also won Best International Feature and Original Screenplay. Meanwhile, the “Mother” helmer took home the Best Director award.
The second-most popular moment of the night was Joaquin Phoenix’s acceptance speech for Best Actor. After winning at every major award ceremony like Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, Screen Actors Guild, and the BAFTAs, the “You Were Never Really Here” star triumphed at the Dolby Theatre for his first-ever Oscar win.
The esteemed star raised his voice against the injustice that has been happening all over the world. In his emotional speech, he also took his late brother’s name (River Phoenix) and shared some of the lyrics he wrote at the age of 17 to spread love and peace.
At number three, it was Joon-Ho’s victory in the Director’s category. The odds were against the South Korean filmmaker as he did not win a single Directing award during the whole awards season. Sam Mendes was poised to win the accolade this time for his war-epic “1917.” But the Academy surprised everyone when they gave the verdict that Joon-Ho should be awarded for his exceptional directing skills. As soon as his name was announced, the netizens expressed their happiness on social media after the win.
Touted as one of the exceptional comeback stories in Hollywood, Renée Zellweger’s Best Actress win was the fourth most tweeted moment of the night. The actress won the trophy for her amazing portrayal of Judy Garland in the movie “Judy.”
The fifth and final most-popular moment of the star-studded night was the surprising performance of rapper Eminem, who took the stage by storm with his “8 Mile” song “Lose Yourself.” Many stars sitting inside the auditorium were left confused by Eminem’s presence at the Oscars.
