The awards season is in full swing and this year’s biggest awards night – The Academy Awards – is all set to take place next month in Los Angeles. The Academy has finally unveiled the first batch of presenters for the star-studded event and it includes last year’s Oscar winners.
According to the organization, the first set of presenters include Rami Malek, Olivia Colman, Mahershala Ali and Regina King. All four artists won the Oscars in their respective categories. Malek was named Best Actor for his portrayal of iconic vocalist Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody” while Colman was adjudged Best Actress of her stellar work in “The Favorite.”
Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”) and Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) won the Supporting Actor trophies.
The producers of this year’s show, Howell Taylor and Stephanie Allain issued a statement saying that they are really thrilled to have these four actors back on stage to celebrate the works of their fellow actors.
“We love the tradition of having the previous year’s Oscar-winning actors on stage to celebrate the achievements of their peers and are thrilled to welcome back these four great talents,” Taylor and Allain said.
The next batch of presenters will be announced soon.
This year’s show will once again be conducted without a host. Speaking with the Hollywood Reporter, the head of ABC Entertainment Karey Burke revealed that the star-studded night will not have a traditional host for the second year in a row because last year’s ceremony saw the viewership go up by 11.5 percent and she is not taking any chances this time, too.
“Let me confirm it now, together with the Academy, that there will be no traditional host this year,” Burke said.
Talking about the nominations, Todd Phillips’ blockbuster hit “Joker” is leading the pack with a staggering 11 nods, including Best Picture. Joaquin Phoenix will be up for the Best Actor trophy and will compete against the likes of Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”), Antonio Banderas (“Pain And Glory”), Jonathan Pryce (“The Two Popes”) and Leonardo DiCaprio (“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”).
Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Sam Mendes’ “1917” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” have all received 10 nods each. Meanwhile, “Little Women” (Greta Gerwig), “Marriage Story” (Noah Baumbach), “Parasite” (Bong Joon-Ho), and “Jojo Rabbit” (Taika Waititi) each garnered six noms.
Scarlett Johansson ("Marriage Story"), Saoirse Ronan ("Little Women"), Cynthia Erivo ("Harriet"), Charlize Theron ("Bombshell"), and Renee Zellweger ("Judy") will battle it out in the Best Actress category.
The 92nd Annual Academy Awards will take place on Feb. 9 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
