Ouch! Video Shows Woman On Phone Falling Into Sidewalk Basement
Surveillance video shows a 67-year-old woman in Plainfield, New Jersey simultaneously using her phone and walking moments before she tripped on open cellar doors and fell six feet into a basement on Thursday.
The sidewalk doors were open because of repairs to gas lines in the area. The video shows the woman coming down the street towards the open cellar doors in front of Acme Windows on Somerset Street. Right before she reaches the doors and falls, she looks down and flips over.

Contributing factors to her fall include the fact that the woman is legally blind and diabetic, as her son told WCBS.
“When I first saw the video, my heart dropped,” he said. “She regularly takes on schedule her meals and checks her sugar. As far as I was told, when she was walking down the street, she felt a little nauseous in a sense, and looked at her phone to see what time it was.”
Emergency crews arrived past noon and pulled the woman out of the basement onto a stretcher. People crowded around the scene and when the police came they closed down the street, Martin Delgadillo, who works nearby, told WNBC.

She was seriously hurt in the fall and was listed in serious condition at a hospital on Thursday night. The woman is now in stable condition, according to police. She came from Florida to visit her son in New Jersey, according to WCBS.
“She may be hurt, but at least she’s alive,” the woman’s son said.
