KEY POINTS

  • Barcelona defeated Atletico 1-0 on Sunday
  • Barcelona now have 41 points from 16 games
  • Barca have not won the La Liga since the 2018-19 season

Ousmane Dembele scored in FC Barcelona's 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the La Liga on Sunday.

The victory at the Wanda Metropolitano saw Barcelona go three points clear at the top of the league table, with Real Madrid in second place and Real Sociedad in the third spot.

The game was very tight since the kick-off Sunday before Barcelona found a breakthrough in the 22nd minute that turned out to be the winner.

Dembele produced a side-footed finish following an incredible pass from Gavi who was surrounded by a number of Atletico players. Even Pedri had a role to play in the lead-up to the goal as he showed great composure to ease past two Atletico defenders into the home side's box before passing the ball to Gavi.

A second goal could have followed quickly but Pedri's lobbed effort from Jose Gimenez's blind backpass was blocked by the home goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Dembele had a chance to clinch a brace but his effort just hit the post in the second half. The French forward now has six goals and seven assists in 22 appearances for Barcelona in the ongoing season.

Dembele is one of only two players to have scored five+ goals and provided five+ assists in La Liga this season, after Atletico's Griezmann (five goals and five assists), according to Opta Jose.

On the other hand, even Atletico Madrid had an opportunity to level scores in added time, but French forward Antoine Griezmann's effort was cleared off the line by Barcelona center-back Ronald Araujo. Both sides finished with 10 men after Stefan Savic and Ferran Torres were given red cards for a brawl on the field.

Defending champions Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 loss to sixth-place Villarreal and Xavi's Barcelona made full use of the situation to take lead in the La Liga title race. The Camp Nou side's last La Liga win came in the 2018-19 season.

Barcelona boss Xavi admitted that even though his side did not play at their best, they secured three "golden points" and he was very glad about the result.

"I liked the first half an hour. The game was under control. The goal came from creating a numerical advantage through the middle. These are three golden points. We knew how to suffer. It's important to have kept a clean sheet. Without playing that well, we got the three points," Xavi told reporters after the game Sunday

"It was a tough game but a big win. It's not just three points, it's a huge morale boost. I am proud of the team. We have made a statement that we are candidates to win the league," the Barca boss added.

Barcelona's next fixture is their Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Real Betis on Thursday.
