The ‘Outlander’ Cast’s TV Obsession: Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe Praise New Netflix Series
The stars you binge-watch have their own TV obsessions. The “Outlander” cast has been quite vocal over the last few weeks about their love for the Netflix docu-series, “Cheer.”
First, Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser on “Outlander,” binge-watched the series right after it dropped on Jan. 8. By Jan. 11, he was on Twitter telling fans all about his love for the TV show. “Obsessed. I never knew I wanted to be in a cheerleading team until now. But has to be #navarrocheer #cheer,” he wrote.
When asked what he loved about the series, Heughan quickly told Decider, “JERRY.” Then added, “All of them! Morgan, Lexi, I’ve stalked them on Instagram. I want the best for these kids.”
He’s referring to the young adults on Navarro College’s cheerleading squad. “Cheer” follows the team at the community college in Corsicana, Texas as they make their way to the National Cheerleaders Association Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida. The focus is on the cheerleaders, many of whom have struggled with chaotic home lives. It shows the heartwarming stories of the students overcoming their adversity to work together and win the title.
It turns out not just Heughan loves the series. Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire on the historical drama, has revealed that she is a big fan too. When veteran TV reporter Kristin Dos Santos tweeted about her love for “Cheer,” Balfe replied, “So there with you.”
Then, Lauren Lyle, who plays Marsali, jumped in with a comment. “Glad your all involved thank god [sic],” she wrote.
Dos Santos jokingly started plotting out how the “Outlander” cast could form their own cheerleading squad, and Balfe revealed that Lyle might actually have some skills fit for the mat.
“Cheer” Season 1 includes six hour-long episodes, making it a perfect binge-watch before “Outlander” returns. Starz’s time travel drama returns Sunday, Feb. 16 with the Season 5 premiere.
