Fergus Outlander
Romann Berrux will only play Fergus for a little while in “Outlander” Season 3 before César Domboy takes over. Starz

For “Outlander” viewers, watching Fergus get his hand cut off was gruesome and tragic. For actor Romann Berrux, however, it was an adventure.

"Getting my hand chopped off, that’s the best,” the actor told PopSugar. “I really, really liked it. It’s true!”

In Sunday’s episode of the Starz drama, Fergus was taunting English officers who were searching for Jamie. He led them in circles in the woods, and they eventually got frustrated and lost their tempers. They held Fergus down and chopped his hand off with a sword. While Berrux acted traumatized, it seems he really enjoyed getting to do a scene with blood and special effects.

“I thought it was so funny, the hand was so realistic . . . they took photos of my hand and they put things around my hand so they could do the perfect representation,” Berrux added. He apparently asked to keep his fake hand, but PopSugar wasn’t sure if the prop department actually gave him the appendage.

“Outlander” VFX supervisor Richard Briscoe told Vulture that the bloody scene took about six weeks to edit. “We wanted it to be in your face,” Briscoe explained. “And we wanted to film his reaction as it happened.”

Though the 16-year-old actor was having fun, he still gave the “Outlander” scene all of his energy. “It took one day to film it, we were in the middle of a forest, so it was very, very, very tiring, but I really, really liked it. I had no more voice at the end of the day because I cried too much,” he revealed.

Unfortunately, Berrux won’t be playing Fergus for much longer. “Outlander” Season 3 will eventually take place 20 years after the Battle of Culloden, so another actor, César Domboy, will play the adult version of the French character.

Domboy has been studying Berrux’s second season episodes in order to keep some continuity. The 27-year-old even tried to adapt the young actor’s mannerisms.

“Do you remember how [young Fergus was] always leaving his hands all over [the place], like a pickpocket? Trying to feel the shapes of everything around him or maybe trying to find a spot to steal something? That’s something I thought was lovely,” Domboy told Entertainment Tonight. “So I’m trying to do stuff like he was doing.”

While young Fergus was clearly more concerned with war and guns, older Fergus will be focused on falling in love. Expect him to meet someone special in “Outlander” Season 3. Don’t expect anything to disrupt Fergus’ loyalty to Jamie, though. While Jamie will spend some serious time in prison away from Fergus, the Frenchman’s devotion to the Frasers will never waver.

It seems like more viewers than ever will see grown up Fergus. Millions are watching the time travel drama. The Sept. 10 premiere brought in 2.09 million viewers. It’s was the highest rated episode of “Outlander,” even beating the beloved wedding episode in Season 1.

“Outlander” Season 3 airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EDT on Starz.
