‘Outlander’ Star Sam Heughan Praises Crew In South Africa

Sam Heughan is in unfamiliar territory. The Scottish actor has temporarily relocated to South Africa for “Outlander” Season 3 filming. He seems to be having a wonderful time and praised his co-workers on the Starz drama.

The Jamie Fraser actor took to Twitter Monday to talk about what an “amazing crew” is working on “Outlander” Season 3.

A handful of “Outlander” crew members from Scotland are in South Africa, but there are many local workers helping create the scenes. Author Diana Gabaldon recently told her fans that she’ll head out to Cape Town to visit the set this week as well.

South Africa is actually standing in for Jamaica. The third season, based on Gabaldon’s “Voyager” novel, starts off with Jamie and Claire separated by a couple centuries, but after they reunite in Scotland, they’ll head to more exotic destinations. “Outlander” Season 3 partially takes place with Jamie and Claire at sea and in the Carribean. That means they need big ships.

Conveniently, Starz’s pirate drama “Black Sails” just finished filming in Cape Town. Heughan revealed Tuesday that several of cast and crew members currently working on “Outlander” used to be on the “Treasure Island”-inspired drama.

Heughan also congratulated “Black Sails” on their four-season run. The series finale airs Sunday, and Heughan recommended that fans binge the whole series to get through the extended “Outlander” hiatus, also known as “Droughtlander.”

Though many expected “Outlander” to return in the spring, Starz finally revealed last month that the time travel drama will not premiere until September. That means that Jamie and Claire will have been on hiatus for over a year by the time Season 3 premieres.

Along with “Black Sails,” Heughan has recommended several other TV shows recently. He proved his love for “Stranger Things” when he geeked out over starlet Millie Bobby Brown at a convention, and he also praised “Marvel’s Iron Fist” to his Twitter followers.

“Outlander” Season 3 premieres in September on Starz. An exact release date has yet to be revealed.
