‘Outlander’ Star Sophie Skelton Fears Fan Reaction To Brianna
“Outlander” fans are very excited about the Season 2 finale. The episode will introduce Brianna and Roger, characters that readers of the underlying book series have been dying to see on screen. While they are pumped, it appears Brianna actress Sophie Skelton is a bit nervous about the reaction to the beloved characters’ arrivals, especially because some details in Diana Gabaldon’s novels have been changed for the Starz drama.
“There’s been this buildup for so long,” Skelton told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s a scary thought because of things like the fact that Brianna’s from Boston, but we decided not to go with a Boston accent. We just assumed that given how she was raised in a private Catholic school in the ’60s, she sort of had any Boston drummed out of her and she’d be a standard American.”
It isn’t just the accent of the daughter of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) that will be different. Although the actress is sporting red hair in new photographs of the “Outlander” Season 2 finale, other physical details are different from the books. “There are things like the eye color,” Skelton said. “I think people are expecting [me to wear] contacts because Bree’s eyes are blue [in the novels]. Everybody will have a different view.”
However, Gabaldon doesn’t seem to mind the small differences. “Lovely to have you, Sophie!” the author tweeted the actress after the casting announcement was made. “You’ll be great.”
Gabaldon has supported the TV show’s little changes in bringing her books to the small screen. She understands that certain modifications have to be made to produce a good TV adaptation. Even the episode 11 that she wrote had several differences from her novel, “Dragonfly in Amber.” “What you’re going to see is not Just The Way It Is In The Book, nor is every word exactly the way I wrote it,” she wrote on Facebook just before the episode aired. “I think it is pretty good, though.”
Brianna will make her first appearance with the adult version of Roger (Richard Rankin) in “Outlander” Season 2, episode 13. The finale will show them with Claire in 1968. Get more spoilers on their appearance here.
“Outlander” Season 2 airs on Starz Saturdays at 9 p.m. EDT.
