Over 130 organizations and famed activist Gloria Steinem have backed actress Amber Heard, who faced harassment following her defamation lawsuit with ex-husband Johnny Depp.

The open letter defending the "Aquaman" actress was shared with NBC News and included the National Organization for Women, the National Women's Law Center, Equality Now and the Women's March Foundation.

Heard lost her defamation trial to Depp in June. The six-week-long televised trial included claims of abuse from both parties which were subsequently denied.

The letter addresses harassment that Heard received in the midst of and following the trial. Depp fans have accused the actress of lying about being a domestic abuse survivor on social media.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence spoke out in support of Heard in June but was met with backlash from Depp's fans and supporters.

"Much of this harassment was fueled by disinformation, misogyny, biphobia and a monetized social media environment where a woman's allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault were mocked for entertainment," the letter states.

"The same disinformation and victim-blaming tropes are now being used against others who have alleged abuse."

Depp filed the defamation suit following Amber Heard's 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she described herself as "a public figure representing domestic abuse." Although the claim did not explicitly state Depp's name, his lawyers argued that the article referenced accusations made after their divorce. Heard filed a countersuit after Depp's attorney told the Daily Mail that her abuse allegations were a "hoax."

Depp was granted $10 million by the Virginia jury while Heard was granted $2 million. Attorneys for Heard have appealed the decision. Depp's team appealed against Heard's $2 million compensatory damages.

Following the trial, Heard said she was "disappointed with what this verdict means for other women."

"It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously," Heard said.

While Depp has since made appearances at the recent MTV Video Music Awards and Rihanna's Savage X Fenty Fashion Show, Heard has strayed away from the limelight in the months following the trial.

The letter denounces the rising misuse of defamation trials to silence domestic abuse survivors. It is one of the largest showings of support for the actress since the trial ended.
