Overwatch 2 - Genji
Genji is an agile hero who excels at assassinations Overwatch 2

KEY POINTS

  • Genji is a fast-paced hero who's great against support and DPS heroes
  • He is best played in very close ranges
  • He can dash in and out of combat by resetting his dash ability on every takedown

Genji is one of the most popular DPS characters, thanks to his cyborg ninja aesthetic, but this doesn't mean that he's easy to use.

Unlike heroes such as Ashe or Soldier 76, Genji has a high-skill floor that makes him somewhat difficult to pick up. However, he rewards those who can prove that they can step up the challenge.

Role and Playstyle

Genji's job is to harass and assassinate the enemy backline. He can use his superior agility to take unconventional paths and hit enemies where it hurts most.

The three Shuriken projectiles launched by his primary and secondary attacks travel slowly but hit very hard when they connect. As such, he works best in close quarters where the travel time is less impactful.

Genji has three mobility options: Double Jump, Wall Climb and Swift Strike. The latter can be used to dart in and out of combat, while the first two improve his overall movement abilities compared to other heroes. All the skills make Genji harder to hit if players use them properly.

Dragonblade, Genji's ultimate, can decimate squishy targets over a decent range. Use it to cleave through multiple targets and quickly eliminate healers.

Tips and Tricks

Treat Genji like a shotgun user similar to Reaper or Roadhog. It's easier to hit targets in close range, especially with his secondary fire mode that throws three projectiles in a fan. Only use the burst-fire mode to poke tanks or finish off low-health targets.

Double Jump is best used as an evasive maneuver in close quarters. Jump over enemies' heads to confuse them while fighting.

Deflect is best used to make safe escapes or daring advances on an enemy. Retreat is its most common use case, but don't be afraid to challenge someone like Hanzo or Widowmaker with it.

Swift Strike's cooldown resets after every takedown, so consider using it to dive instead of saving it for an escape. Keep in mind that this can be used in very close quarters by double jumping and aiming for the ground. This will keep players from overshooting.

Casting Dragonblade resets Swift Strike's cooldown. Use this technique to dash to the backline or up in the air before drawing Genji's sword. Then, dash back in to deal massive damage to unsuspecting targets.

Dragonblade's swing animations can be canceled using Swift Strike. This will still deal damage from both attacks.
