Packers Active At Trade Deadline, Cowboys, Chiefs Could Make Sense As Trade Partners For Green Bay
Most of the teams looking to deal players before Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline are out of the playoff race. That isn’t the case with the Green Bay Packers, who could move a starter as they look to contend in the NFC.
According to multiple reports, Packers’ safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is available. A few teams are looking for help in the secondary, and they could turn to Green Bay to make an upgrade.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport pointed out Monday morning that both the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs had trade discussions with the Seattle Seahawks about Earl Thomas. Now that the safety is done for the season with an injury, it’s possible that one of those teams could view Clinton-Dix as a solution to improve their area of need.
Clinton-Dix has played well this season. The former first-round draft pick leads the Packers with three interceptions, and he’s fourth on the team in tackles. He’s got a sack and three passes defensed. Since entering the league in 2014, Clinton-Dix has 14 picks and hasn’t missed a single game.
Green Bay is willing to trade Clinton-Dix because of his impending free agency. The 25-year-old is making $6 million this season, all of which is guaranteed, after a down 2017 campaign.
In addition to potentially trading Clinton-Dix, the Packers could also add a player that will help them win in 2018. FOX’s Jay Glazer reported Sunday that Green Bay is looking for a pass rusher.
The Packers’ defense hasn’t been bad this season. The team ranks sixth in the NFL in both sacks and passing defense. Green Bay is 16th in points allowed per game.
Aaron Rodgers is still putting up big numbers, but the Packers are just 13th in points per game.
Losing on the road to the Los Angeles Rams Sunday afternoon dropped the Packers to 3-3-1 on the season. Green Bay is alone in third place in the NFC North, but they trail the Chicago Bears by just a half-game. The Packers beat the Bears in the season opener.
It won’t be easy for Green Bay to get back above .500 in Week 9. They will visit the New England Patriots on “Sunday Night Football.”
