Packers News: Aaron Rodgers' COVID-19 Diagnosis Forces QB To Miss Chiefs’ Game, Possibly More
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers won’t play Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs after testing positive for COVID-19. Rodgers is unvaccinated, according to reports, and will be forced to stay away from the team for at least 10 days.
Without Rodgers, Green Bay’s chances of winning in Kansas City decrease substantially. The Packers had been just one-point underdogs on the road against the Chiefs. When it was reported that Rodgers was ruled out, the betting line jumped to 7.5 points in favor of Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City.
Backup quarterback Jordan Love will make his first career start for the Packers. Since being selected by Green Bay in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Love has attempted just seven passes in the regular season.
Entering Week 9, the Packers are the NFC’s No. 1 seed with an NFL-best 7-1 record. Green Bay has gone undefeated since losing against the New Orleans Saints in the season opener.
The Packers took control of the top seed by upsetting the Arizona Cardinals in Week 8. Star receiver Davante Adams missed the contest with COVID-19.
The minimum 10-day absence puts Rodgers’ status for Week 10 in jeopardy, as well. Rodgers isn’t eligible to return until Nov. 13 if he is asymptomatic. Green Bay hosts the Seattle Seahawks Sunday, Nov. 14.
After winning his third MVP award last season, Rodgers continues to play like one of the league’s best quarterbacks. Rodgers has 17 touchdown passes and one interception during the team’s seven-game winning streak.
In August, Rodgers told reporters that he had been “immunized” when asked if he was vaccinated. Rodgers petitioned the NFL in the summer to consider him the same as a vaccinated player because of treatment that he underwent, ESPN reports, but the quarterback’s request was denied.
Green Bay has been without defensive coordinator Joe Barry since he tested positive for COVID-19 last week.
