Panera Bread Tests Artificial Intelligence Drive-Thru Ordering
Panera Bread announced on Monday that it will be testing out artificial intelligence ordering technology at select locations with drive-thru services to analyze if the system can work more efficiently than currently.
The AI technology, named "Tori," created by OpenCity, will interact with customers to take orders. It will be tested at two locations in Rochester, New York, Panera said in a press release.
"At Panera, improving our guest experience is always our priority and we are using this innovative technology to help enable a faster, more accurate order for each of our drive-thru guests," Debbie Roberts, the company's chief operating officer, said in a press release.
"The potential of AI drive-thru technology is incredibly exciting for us – we are eager to evaluate the performance of these tests and the possibility of expanding this technology in additional bakery-cafes," Roberts added.
Panera said it feels the AI technology will help its staff to focus on preparing orders, which will increase accuracy and encourage speed.
Panera is the first to step into actual AI specifically for drive-thru services.
Fast food restaurants such as Burger King and McDonald's have also leaned away from conventional ordering by incorporating screens in their restaurants to encourage speedy transactions.
Panera uses face-to-face ordering inside its restaurants but it has made other modern upgrades including mobile ordering and a subscription service.
