The Carolina Panthers could use Cam Newton to help them out but it appears the top pick of the 2011 NFL Draft is not yet ready to return. The 30-year-old joins a list of big-name quarterbacks in sickbay. From the looks of it, it would be best for him to return when he is certain that is 100-percent healthy once more.

Sources tell Ian Rapoport that Newton could be missing more time. Although his foot injury is not a major one, getting more time to recuperate and get back his old self would be best for Carolina. He did play the first two games of the season but did not look like his usual self. Until Newton is ready, coach Ron Rivera will be turning to Kyle Allen.

Allen made a good account of himself last time out against the Arizona Cardinals. He completed 19 of 26 passes for 261 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions to lead the Panthers to a 38-20 win. The 23-year-old undrafted free agent now has six touchdowns and no interceptions in two NFL starts.

“What Cam needs right now is time and rest for his foot. We want him at 100 percent when he’s ready, so there’s no exact timetable for his return,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said in a statement released Monday by the team. “At this point, we’re going to go forward with Kyle [Allen] as our starter.”

With the success that the Panthers are getting from Allen, it comes to no surprise that some may be questioning Newton's job safety. Rivera stressed that Newton’s starting job is safe but that the team feels comfortable giving him time to fully heal with Allen calling the signals.

In a previous post, it was reported that Newton was spotted in a walking boot. But it appears that Newton's injury will not force the hand of the Panthers to consider adding another quarterback. Rivera feels that they have the right people already and that there is a reason why they were brought here. The Panthers are 1-2 for the season, losing to the Los Angeles Rams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before bouncing back against the Cardinals.
