A Missouri couple has been arrested after their "extremely malnourished and emaciated" 2-month-old girl was found dead inside their home, reports said.

Austen M. Taube Hack, 19, and Sarah Stone, 20 - the parents of the now deceased baby - were charged Wednesday after officials found the little girl dead in the couple's apartment in Independence on Monday, Kansas City reported.

Emergency officers responded to the scene after they received a call reporting that the infant was found "unresponsive, not breathing, and cold to the touch." The baby was on the floor inside a bedroom and pronounced dead at the scene, the report said.

"She appeared to be wearing a cloth diaper and a white onesie. The victim's ribs and collarbone were protruding through her skin," the officials said in the charging document.

The baby weighed 5 pounds and 9 ounces and suffered from severe malnutrition and dehydration.

According to the report, detectives were called to investigate the case and they interviewed the parents. They found out that the baby girl was delivered at the couple's residence without any medical assistance and she was never taken to a doctor. The infant was breastfed, never given bottles and received no immunizations.

The couple said they did not allow anyone to visit the child as "the world is a scary place," and they did not seek any help in taking care of the baby as they believed it would make it worse.

The detectives noted the baby was found on the floor inside a bedroom and "appeared extremely malnourished and emaciated."

During interrogation, when the cops showed the parents their infant's pictures, the duo said they never felt the child was sick or unhealthy at any point before her death.

While executing a search warrant, cops found several items of drug paraphernalia, including traces of marijuana, from the residence. Hack admitted that he used the drug regularly, while Stone said she used them while she was pregnant, news outlet KMBC reported.

Meanwhile, the officials didn't reveal the exact cause of the infant's death. The parents are now facing charges of abuse and neglect of a child resulting in death and are in the custody of Independence police. They would be shifted to the Jackson County jail, reports said.

In a similar incident in Florida, a mother starved her 18-month-old son to death by forcing him to follow a strict vegan diet, feeding the child only breast milk, raw fruits and vegetables. The accused, Sheila O'Leary, was sentenced to life in prison in August after her infant died due to "complications from severe malnutrition and dehydration."
