Paris Jackson's 'Jesus' Role Slammed; Petition Calls Movie 'Blasphemous,' 'Christianophobic Garbage'
KEY POINTS
- Many people aren't happy about Paris Jackson's upcoming portrayal of Jesus
- Two petitions have been gaining steam to scrap the indie film
- An executive producer said this story was just "blown out of proportion"
Paris Jackson's portrayal of Jesus in an upcoming film has sparked a huge backlash. In fact, over 285,000 people who aren’t happy with her stint have now signed a petition to stop the distribution of the movie “Habit” online.
The film has been called “blasphemous” and “Christianophobic garbage” in the description of the petition, which aims to gather 300,000 signatures.
“The film 'Habit' stars Paris Jackson who plays the role of 'lesbian Jesus,'” the Change.org petition stated. “Distributors haven’t picked it up as of yet, so let’s please spread awareness and wake people up to the Christianophobic garbage that is spread nowadays, but is somehow accepted and praised by society.”
News broke in April that the daughter of the late Michael Jackson had been tapped to play Jesus in the indie film, which will also star Gavin Rossdale and Bella Thorne. “Habit” will revolve around “a street smart, party girl with a Jesus fetish [who] gets mixed up in a violent drug deal and finds a possible way out; by masquerading as a nun,” a press release stated (via Deadline).
Aside from the Change.org petition created a week ago, another one is steadily gaining signatures. As of writing, One Million Moms’ call to scrap movie has garnered more than 74,000 signatures, USA Today said. The group accused the film of mocking Christianity and people of faith.
However, one of the film’s executive producers, Cassian Elwes, took to Twitter to address the criticism that “Habit” has been receiving since it was announced.
“Of course the story has been completely blown out of proportion. In fact, Paris appears in a fantasy moment that Bella has in the film where Bella has a vision of her mother played by Paris ) dressed as Jesus,” he wrote.
Elwes also denounced the claim that Jackson is going to portray a “lesbian Jesus,” calling it “absolute nonsense.”
“Habit” will be helmed by first-time feature director Janell Shirtcliff. Suki Kaiser wrote the script based on a story by Libby Mintz and Shirtcliff.
This news comes on the heels of the 22-year-old’s docuseries “Unfiltered: Paris Jackson and Gabriel Glenn.” In the first episode of the Facebook Watch show, the model opened up about her sexuality and how her father showed his support for her preferences prior to his death.
“I thought I’d end up marrying a chick... I’ve dated more women than men, been with more chicks. The public only knows about three long-term relationships I’ve been with and they’ve been with men. The public doesn’t know about, like, most of the relationships I’ve been in,” Paris revealed.
The celebrity also recalled how the “Man In The Mirror” singer used to tease her, along with her brothers, about having a girlfriend.
