A standoff in Parma, Ohio, between a suspect and police ended with the 21-year-old taken into custody without incident Wednesday morning.

The tense situation unfolded around 5:30 a.m., when residents of the Towerview Apartments in Parma called 911 to report a man breaking apartment windows and yelling, WOIO reported.

When police arrived on the scene, the suspect indicated that he was armed, witness Amber Evert told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

"I heard this guy shout, 'get away, I've got hostages, I've got a Mac-10,' " she told the paper.

But the man did not have a gun, authorities told ABC 5.

Another witness, Mary Phillips, told Fox 8 Cleveland that she saw the suspect throw things out the window.

“It’s something you don’t see every day, especially in Parma,” Phillips said.

The same sentiment was shared by Nick Enzel, who lives in the nearby Statehouse Apartments.

"I've seen cop cars coming in and out of these apartments all the time," Enzel told the Plain Dealer. "But there's never been anything like this."

Police tried to engage with the suspect by speaking to him through a window on the third floor of the building, according to WOIO. But he did not want to surrender and requested a phone.

Eventually, a SWAT team was called in and the suspect stopped talking to police. That’s when authorities made their move and dashed into the apartment building. The suspect, only described as a 21-year-old man, was then arrested.

The suspect suffered self-inflicted injuries during the standoff and was taken to Parma Hospital, Fox 8 Cleveland reported.
