Passenger Unaware That She Was Pregnant Gives Birth Mid-Flight In Aircraft Bathroom

A passenger on a KLM flight who was unaware that she was pregnant gave birth inside the aircraft bathroom mid-flight, reports said.

The passenger, identified only by the first name, Tamara, unexpectedly gave birth while she was onboard the KLM Royal Dutch flight from Guayaquil, Ecuador to Spain with a layover in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on Dec.7, NY Post reported.

During her 11-hour journey from Ecuador, before landing in Amsterdam, Tamara felt her stomach hurt, and went to the aircraft toilet, where she made the surprise delivery. The unexpected mom was then helped by two doctors and a nurse from Austria who were also on the same flight, reports said.

"A few hours before landing in the Netherlands, her stomach hurt and she decided to go to the toilet. To her great surprise, after two contractions, she suddenly had a baby in her hands," a spokesperson from the Spaarne Gasthuis Haarlem Zuid hospital in Amsterdam where Tamara and her newborn were later admitted told NL Times.

"Tamara had no idea she was pregnant and was quite taken aback by the event," they added.

After the aircraft landed in Schiphol, Amsterdam, at around 12:55 p.m. Thursday, the mother and the newborn were rushed to a hospital. Tamara named her baby Maximiliano, after one of the passengers who helped her after the delivery.

"The team in the birthing department did everything possible to ensure that both received proper care and were on their way for the necessary paperwork for Maximiliano. As soon as possible, Tamara and Maximiliano will travel to Madrid. The Spaarne Gasthuis wishes them well!" the hospital reportedly said on its website.

In a similar incident in May, staff of Frontier Airlines was hailed a hero after helping a pregnant passenger onboard give birth safely during mid-flight. The unidentified woman gave birth while she was traveling from Denver International Airport to Orlando International Airport. After the delivery, the aircraft took a diversion to land early at Pensacola Airport in Florida, where paramedics treated the new mom and baby. The child was given the middle name "Sky" to honor her unusual birth during flight, reports said.
