KEY POINTS

  • The recalled products may contain some common allergens
  • The distribution of the products has been suspended
  • Customers can return them to get a refund

A company is recalling two types of pastries because they may contain undeclared allergens. The products were distributed across the nation.

The recall affects Alsultan Sweets Baklava and Betefour pastries, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The baklava pastries may contain undeclared milk and wheat, whereas the recalled betefour product may contain undeclared cashews, pistachios and almonds, which are tree nuts.

Milk, wheat and tree nuts are among the eight most common food allergens that account for about 90% of all reactions, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).

Under the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004, these allergens' presence in a product should be listed "in clear language" on the label. It's important for people with allergies to be careful in reading the ingredient lists of the foods they eat.

"The recall was initiated after it was discovered that products containing the allergens were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of the allergens," Falcon Import and Export noted. "Distribution of the products has been suspended until the labeling is corrected."

People who are allergic or sensitive to these items may risk having a "serious or life-threatening" reaction if they eat them. Tree nuts, for instance, are one of the food allergens that are most often linked to anaphylaxis, which is the "potentially life-threatening reaction" that can send the body into shock.

There have been no reports of illnesses related to the recalled products.

The recall affects Alsultan Sweets Baklava that came in 12.3-oz (350 grams) size with the UPC 629700099929 and expiration date of 02/04/2023, and in 750 grams size with UPC 629700099912 and expiration date of 01/19/2023. The recalled Alsultan Sweets Betefour, on the other hand, came in 10.5-oz (600 grams) size and had the UPC 6297000999739 and expiration date 02/04/2023.

They were distributed in retail stores "nationwide" as well as through mail orders.

"Consumers who are allergic to milk, wheat, and tree nuts should not consume," the company noted.

Customers can take the recalled products back to where they were purchased to get a full refund. Those with questions can call the company at 571-276-7183.
