Pat Robertson Haiti comments stir controversy
Rev. Pat Robertson's comments on the Christian Broadcasting Network's 700 Club Wednesday stirred controversy after he suggested the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti two days ago may be a curse.
Something happened a long time ago in Haiti. They got together and swore a pact to the Devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you get us free from the French.' True story, Rev. Robertson said yesterday.
And so, the Devil said, 'OK, it's a deal.' And they kicked the French out. You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another, he added.
The earthquake struck at 4:53 p.m. EST 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, the capital on Tuesday. About 100,000 people are feared dead but no official death toll has been released yet.
Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God's wrath. If you watch the entire video segment, Dr. Robertson's compassion for the people of Haiti is clear. He called for prayer for them, the Christian Broadcasting Network replied in a statement.
The network said Rev. Robertson's humanitarian arm has been working to help people in Haiti over the last year and they are currently launching a major relief and recovery effort to help the victims of the earthquake.
Evangelist Franklin Graham, said Robertson must have misspoken.
But we need to get on the path of helping people right now. God loves the people of Haiti. He hasn't turned his back on Haiti, Graham said, according to ABCNews.
