Patrick Mahomes Injury: Positive Update On QB's Sprained Ankle For Chiefs vs. Bengals
Patrick Mahomes provided a positive injury update on his sprained ankle Wednesday when speaking with reporters. Four days before the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2023 AFC Championship Game, there doesn't seem to be any concern that the quarterback won't play with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.
"It's doing good. A few days of treatment, a few days of rehab," a smiling Mahomes said when asked about his ankle. "Excited to get on the practice field and kind of test it out and see where I'm at. But, it's feeling good so far."
Perhaps even more encouraging than what Mahomes said was how he looked. The Chiefs quarterback wasn't wearing a walking boot and showed no signs of a limp when he stepped off the podium and walked out of the press conference.
Mahomes' injury appears to have improved since the quarterback suffered a high ankle sprain in Kansas City's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional playoffs. The likely 2022 MVP couldn't walk without limping after getting hurt. Even though Mahomes finished the game, the Chiefs quickly went from favorites against the Bengals to home underdogs because of the uncertainty regarding Mahomes' health.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters that Mahomes would practice. The quarterback could be limited, but Reid said he expects his star player to be a full participant in the team's walkthrough.
Earlier in the week, Reid said that Mahomes' injury didn't appear to be as severe as the high ankle sprain that he suffered in the 2019 season opener. Mahomes played the following week and threw four touchdown passes. The Chiefs went on to win the Super Bowl, and Mahomes was named the game's MVP.
The Bengals are 3-0 against Mahomes and the Chiefs in the last 12 months, including a Cincinnati victory in Kansas City in last year's AFC Championship Game.
