‘Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj’ Canceled At Netflix Before 2020 Election
Netflix’s “Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj” will not return for Volume 7. The political commentary show has been canceled. The host announced Tuesday that the show was over.
“What a run,” Minhaj wrote on Twitter Tuesday. “[‘Patriot Act’] has come to an end. I got to work with the best writers, producers, researchers, and animators in the game. My 2 babies were born and grew up with the show. [Thank you] to @Netflix and everyone who watched."
Minhaj, who launched the show in October 2018, ended his Twitter announcement with a joke: “Now it’s time to return these screens to Best Buy.”
Meanwhile, he seemingly referenced “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” when he made the announcement on Instagram. “I’ll miss the show, but I hear there’s a British guy who has one that is quite similar,” he wrote. Oliver’s show launched on HBO in 2014.
“Patriot Act” was one of Netflix’s rare weekly series. It delved into the political and cultural landscape with Minhaj’s comedic commentary. Minhaj has covered topics like “Is College Still Worth It?” and “Why We Can’t Retire” as well as recent news like the coronavirus pandemic and the murder of George Floyd. The show came to an end in late June with “Why Doing Taxes Is So Hard.”
Before “Patriot Act,” Minhaj collaborated with Netflix on his 2017 standup comedy special, “Homecoming King.”
It isn’t clear why the show is ending. Netflix doesn’t release ratings, but Minhaj had fulfilled the entire episode order. Netflix initially contracted him for 32 episodes before adding an additional 7. “Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj” ended with 39 episodes across six seasons (or volumes, as the show stylized them).
Minhaj told Deadline in June that he was hoping to do more episodes and cover the 2020 presidential election.
“We’re currently talking about what does election coverage look like in the future and what does that look like on Netflix and in the ‘Patriot Act’ form. Covering election season is really really fun and I would really love to do it and it would be really fun to do it on a global platform while the world is watching,” he said at the time.
