Patriots News: Tom Brady Will 'Never' Trust Cordarrelle Patterson, Former Executive Says

Cordarrelle Patterson's performances this season so far mean Tom Brady will likely "never" trust him, according to former New England Patriots executive Mike Lombardi.

Patterson was acquired by the Patriots from the Oakland Raiders in a trade earlier this year and had high expectations placed on him ahead of the 2018 NFL season.

However, the wide receiver has recorded just five catches for 36 yards as well as four rushes for 18 yards in the three games the Patriots have played this season, contributing to the side's current 1-2 record.

In addition, he has run the wrong routes and even tripped himself when receiving the ball from Brady during their 31-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2.

Patterson is not the only wide receiver to struggle however. The likes of Chris Hogan and Phillip Dorsett have not stepped up either, especially in the absence of the suspended Julian Edelman who will return in Week 5, while new acquisition Josh Gordon has not made his debut yet.

Despite this, Lombardi believes there's "no chance" Brady will trust Patterson, in particular, anymore.

“Cordarrelle Patterson runs the wrong route — Cordarrelle Patterson is always going to run the wrong route," Lombardi said on the "GM Street" podcast, as quoted on 247 Sports. "[Tom] Brady is never going to trust Cordarrelle Patterson. There’s no chance. No chance."

Patterson notably mentioned during training camp earlier this summer how unforgiving Brady could be when mistakes were made, particularly when it came to route running.

"I mean that’s Tom Brady, man," Patterson said. “You better get where the hell you need to be at the right time or you ain’t going to get the ball. So that’s the kind of trust I need to build with him. … Like I say sometimes we make mistakes, man. We’re human. Nobody’s perfect but God. So I’ve just got to keep showing them I can be where I need to be at the right time and the right place.”

The Patriots suffered their second loss of the season to the Detroit Lions in a shock 26-10 defeat this past Sunday. Their defense proved ineffective while there was simply a lack of production on their end against a side who were 0-2 before the game.

"I mean, we’re not scoring enough points," Brady explained after the game. "We’re not executing well enough on a down-by-down basis. Certainly at a high level, we should have our expectations set in. The process has been the same, there’s been a lot of talk about it in practice, and we’re going through it and watching the film and correcting stuff, it’s just not getting done on the field. And we have to get it corrected soon."

The New England side will look to get back to winning ways when they host the unbeaten Miami Dolphins this Sunday at the Gillette Stadium.
