PBAU Graduate Disagrees With Melania Trump’s Distinction Award: FLOTUS’ Be Best ‘Inconsistent’
KEY POINTS
- Melania Trump should not be given the Women of Distinction award

- Melania Trump’s Be Best campaign criticized
One graduate from Palm Beach Atlantic University has disagreed with Melania Trump being given the Women of Distinction award.
Last week, the first lady of the United States was given the Woman of Distinction award by PBAU. Eileen Burn, co-chairman of the event, praised President Donald Trump’s wife for being an exquisite human being, a magnificent wife and life partner, a superb other and an outstanding FLOTUS who represents the country brilliantly.
However, not all PBAU graduates agreed with the decision. Kyra Kinnaman, expressed her objection in an op-ed in the Palm Beach Post. According to her, Melania is “not the kind of distinction” PBAU should be awarding. She cited four reasons for her stance against the FLOTUS being given the Women of Distinction award.
First, Kinnaman said that the FLOTUS’ publicity stunts are “disrespectful to the dignity of human persons.” She referred to Melania’s infamous jacket printed with “I DON’T REALLY CARE, DO U?” when she visited an immigration detention center.
Second, she finds Melania’s Be Best campaign “not consistent.” Melania has never criticized her husband from her frequent online harassment including his attack towards 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg. Third, Melania allegedly plagiarized Michelle Obama’s speech. Lastly, she felt that Melania has done nothing in separating herself from the nationalist, racist narrative often promulgated by the White House.
“This may be a misguided choice by PBAU, who merely chose a first lady as the person to honor since she resides within the qualifying county. However, I am fairly certain that this decision was more calculated and had a fiscal agenda,” she concluded.
Melania explained in a statement that she started the Be Best initiative after receiving non-stop personal attacks online. The FLOTUS said that she’s the “most bullied person in the world.” However, not everyone agreed with her because for some, she’s spoiled, well-kept and pampered.
As for the plagiarism issue, some defended the FLOTUS from it. According to some netizens on Quora, it was her staff’s fault because they weren’t up to the task. Some even called them lazy and incompetent. Meredith McIver had also spoken about the issue and took the blame. She admitted that she meant no harm when she included passages of the ex-FLOTUS’ 2008 speech at Melania’s address.
