Pelicans High On Williamson-Barrett Reunion, Plan To Move Up 2019 NBA Draft
The New Orleans Pelicans seem to be overstuffed with talent right now following the Anthony David trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. One thing they need to do is shore up the frontline and make sure that prospective top NBA pick Zion Williamson get ample support. That could come in the form of RJ Barrett if David Griffin can pull some strings.
According to a report from the New York Post, the Pelicans have reportedly had internal talks about moving up to the second pick for the coming 2019 NBA Draft. The Memphis Grizzlies hold the rights to the second overall pick so it will be interesting what and who New Orleans will be offering. The Pelicans could move any of their remaining players or perhaps some of the new faces in the mix. That includes Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, and Brandon Ingram.
If Griffin is able to work things out, a Williamson-Barrett pairing could be something worth watching. Both are familiar with each other's play although they will have to learn the ropes as far as going up against other seasoned NBA stars. Thankfully, they will have a proven veteran to help guide them next NBA season in Jrue Holiday, the Bleacher Report reported. However, they will need to fill in other slots as well if they are to bounce back and start the post-Anthony Davis era on a high note.
This could be an alternative scenario for Griffin with Julius Randle expected to opt out of his deal with the Pelicans. As mentioned in a previous post, the 24-year-old will be testing the free agent market to see which team can offer him the best offer. With Williamson coming in, there are some who question the viability of seeing both together on the court. Several teams are reportedly interested in the 7th overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft such as the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks.
For the Pelicans, it is all about rebuilding. A trade could ensue before, during or after the 2019 NBA Draft - assuming they are deadset on getting Barret to play alongside Williamson. Assuming they hold off on trades until after the draft, the Pelicans could be dealing with either the Grizzlies or the Knicks. Memphis picks second with most believing it will be Ja Morant while the Knicks pick third and pundits believe it will be used on Barrett. The Pelicans select again at fourth thanks to that Davis trade with the Lakers.
