Penelope Cruz recently came to Johnny Depp’s defense after his ex-wife, Amber Heard accused him of domestic violence.
In the actress’ written declaration, which was obtained by The Blast, Cruz detailed the start of her friendship with Depp at a time when she didn’t know anyone in Hollywood. Cruz and Depp first met when the actress was just 19 years old after being introduced by director Pedro Almodovar.
“Many years have passed and I have not only made 3 movies with him, but I also count on him as a great friend. I’ve always been impressed by his kindness, his brilliant mind, his talent, and his peculiar sense of humor. I’ve seen Johnny in so many situations and he is always kind to everyone around. He is one of the most generous people I know,” she wrote.
Cruz also said that Depp was supportive during her pregnancy while they were both starring in the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean.” During the first six months of the actress’ pregnancy, Cruz spent every single day with Depp on the set of the movie.
“My husband [actor Javier Bardem] and I will never forget the sweetness, protection, and kindness he treated me with during every single step of that process. We love him very much and I feel lucky to have someone so special in our lives,” she concluded.
Cruz’s written declaration in favor of Depp came days after Winona Ryder also filed a written declaration about her former fiancé. According to Ryder, it was hard to believe that Depp would ever commit an act of domestic violence especially to someone that he loves.
“I do not want to call anyone a liar but from my experience of Johnny, it is impossible to believe that such horrific allegations are true. I find it extremely upsetting knowing him as I do,” Ryder said.
The former couple first met in 1989 and one year later they starred in “Edward Scissorhands.” The actors dated for four years before calling it quits.
