Is ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ Canceled Or Renewed For Season 2?
“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” Season 1 is ending with tonight’s finale, but will it be canceled or renewed for Season 2? The original “Penny Dreadful” ended after just three seasons, so fans are understandably concerned about the prequel series’ future on Showtime.
The drama, which stars “Game of Thrones” alum Natalie Dormer, has not been canceled or renewed yet. Showtime has yet to make a decision regarding the future of “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” but fans often look to the ratings to get some clues.
According to TV Series Finale, the spinoff is averaging 352,000 viewers each week, which isn’t exactly impressive. The good news is that while it’s certainly not the best, those aren’t the worst numbers on the network either. It’s middle of the line for Showtime, which has “Shameless” pulling in 850,000 viewers and “The L Word” reboot boasting 224,000 viewers.
Since overall viewers make it hard to predict whether the TV show is facing cancellation or renewal, let's look at the demo. The all-important 18-29 demographic sits at just 0.03 for “City of Angels,” which once again puts it in the middle of the line. Of Showtime’s 21 scripted series, it’s rated 12th in the demo. Again, it's very much in the middle.
Ultimately, “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” is considered “on the bubble,” meaning it might be renewed or it might be canceled. It isn't clear when Showtime will announce the fate of the fantasy period drama.
Luckily, fans don’t have to worry about the cast wanting out. It sounds like Dormer is very intrigued by Magda.
“I get to be the antagonist and in doing so, I get to help John Logan explore these themes that feel very personal to me,” she told Town and Country. “[Creator] John [Logan] and I realized quite quickly there's no point in playing a two-dimensional bad guy, then it's evil for evil's sake. Magda is basically saying she can only work with what is already in the human heart. John created me to be that metaphor of how far can a ‘good person’ go toward an evil deed. And again, you could argue that is highly relevant for our modern day. But also, Magda has her own story. She seems angry and in pain, so will we find out why down the line?”
The Season 1 finale of “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” airs Sunday at 10 p.m. EDT on Showtime.
