People’s Choice Awards: Biggest Winners, Best Moments, Rousing Performances [PHOTOS]
The 2012 People's Choice Awards took place Wednesday in Los Angeles, Cali. at the Nokia Theatre and attracted the likes of some of the most popular artists in pop culture today. Emma Stone, Demi Lovato, Robert Pattinson, Lea Michele, Nina Dobrev, Ellen DeGeneres and the cast of Pretty Little Liars all hit the red carpet for another year of the fan-favorites fete. It was a celebration of the most beloved music, television and film artists of the year, as chosen by 40 million voters.
Biggest Wins
Katy Perry, though noticeably absent Wednesday night, took home the most wins, having been honored in five categories. Perry won Favorite Female Artist, Tour Headliner, Song of the Year for E.T. with Kanye West, Music Video for Last Friday Night and TV Guest Star for How I Met Your Mother.
The pop singer told fans via Twitter that she would not be attending the show but thanked them for their support. I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed! she wrote. The California beauty most likely skipped the People's Choice Awards because of her recent divorce from husband Russell Brand. Despite personal turmoil, Perry is beginning 2012 with immense fan support.
Another big winner of the night was the Harry Potter movie series. The final installment snagged four awards including Favorite Movie, Action Movie, Ensemble Movie Cast and Book Adaptation.
Emma Stone and Johnny Depp, who was not in attendance, took home two trophies each. Stone won for Favorite Movie Actress and Favorite Comedic Actress. Depp won for Favorite Actor and Favorite Animated Voice for Rango.
I moved to L.A. eight years ago this week with my mom, who's right there, Stone said while accepting her crystal trophies. It is so insane to be standing up here right now. It is hard to describe to you.
Best Moments
Some great moments happened Wednesday night, as far as awards shows are concerned.
Firstly, the red carpet dazzled as actresses dressed in stunning jewels tones colored the red carpet beautiful. Demi Lovato looked ravishing in a mandarin-hued Marchesa dress with gemstone-encrusted bodice.
Other red carpet stunners included Emma Stone and Kelly Osbourne. Emma Stone embraced menswear-chic in a Gucci suit with emerald green blazer and Tiffany & Co. jewelry. The 27-year-old Osbourne, who is an E! fashion correspondent, did her role as style guru justice in an Honor dress with Casadei heels and Roseark jewels.
Another beauty was Canadian actress Nina Dobrev who looked enviable in a peridot green Elie Saab dress with sheer lace sleeves.
The hostess of the night, actress Kaley Cuoco from The Big Bang Theory, was charming and natural. The opening skit showing the Big Bang characters filling out their People's Choice Awards ballots poked fun at other voters. Sheldon griped about the validity of the categories, saying the nominees and winners are chosen by the same people who think that blankets need sleeves . . . and the best use of the Internet is forwarding their friends allegedly funny videos of cats.
Another great moment of the night was when Neil Patrick Harris won the award for Best TV Comedy Actor for his role on CBS' How I Met Your mother. Harris made sure to thank his Twitter followers. Love those Twitter fans. Keep it up, guys! He also thanked his partner, David Burtka, and their twins, Gideon and Harper. The actors joked about the twins, who he said should be asleep right now... in the limo at the valet.
Rousing Performances
Demi Lovato's performance was probably the most anticipated of the night. Her personal struggles have been a source of media scrutiny since she entered rehab in 2010 for bulimia and self-inflicted injuries. [I] was performing concerts on an empty stomach...I was losing my voice from purging. I was self-medicating. I was not taking medication for depression, and I literally was so emotionally whacked out that I took it out on someone that meant a lot to me, she told ABC News.
The former Disney star has certainly made a comeback. Her name began trending Wednesday night on Twitter as fans sent their well-wishes and congratulated her on her performance. Though some critics said that her voice was pitchy, her performance of Give Your Heart A Break off her new album Unbroken got a rousing round of applause.
Lovtao then secured the win for Favorite Pop Artist, competing against the likes of heavyweight stars like Katy Perry, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Click here to watch her performance.
Another performance that received acclaim was Faith Hill's rendition of her recent single Come Home. A somber, sweet song, Faith proved she's still got it and isn't afraid to show it! wrote celebrity blogger Perez Hilton. Hill looked stunning in a red jumpsuit.
