A pet cat was “savaged” by two dogs, leaving the owner devastated. The incident took place in Plymouth, England, on Wednesday.

Speaking to Plymouth Live, 60-year-old Kay Pannell said moments after hearing a commotion outside her home, she heard her pet “scream.” She rushed outside and saw two dogs savaging the feline. The cat was killed in front of her eyes.

Stewart Ewens, Pannell’s nephew said, the feline had been with his aunt for 12 years before it was killed.

“Gizmo [the cat] was outside in a field adjacent to the house. My auntie heard a commotion and [her] cat scream. She went out there and saw dogs had savaged the cat,” Ewens said, adding that he believes the canines belonged to a neighbor.

The family now wants to spread awareness and asks owners to be more careful.

“I don't blame the dogs because it's the responsibility of their owners to safeguard them against such actions. I want to raise awareness, pet owners [need] to take more care, particularly in residential areas where there's likely to be other pets. There are areas where dogs can be let off leads. People need to be more sensible,” Ewens added.

Confirming the incident, a Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spokesperson said, "This must’ve been very upsetting and we would like to remind pet owners that they should keep their dogs under control to prevent injury to people and animals. If you have any concerns then we would advise owners to keep their dogs on a lead when around other animals."

"Not only could a bit of extra diligence save lives but dog owners also have a legal responsibility under the Dangerous Dogs Act to keep their dogs under control in a public place. The police and the council can prosecute anyone believed to be breaching the Dangerous Dogs Act,” the spokesperson added.
