A pet dog has been hailed a hero after he saved the life of his owner from a burning building in Utah late last month.

The dog's bark alerted the firefighters to where the elderly woman was, following which she was rescued. However, the canine did not make it.

The woman's daughter, MaKayla Fox, recently spoke out about the incident, saying her mother was alive only because of the family dog.

Fox's mother – who has not been named – was asleep in their home when a fire began to spread. There was no one inside the house other than their pet dog, Bleu, she told ABC 4. Seeing the fire spread rapidly, Bleu began to bark.

“He went to the back glass door, and he started barking,” Fox said. “He was barking really loud, trying to get my mom. Obviously, he knew my mom was inside.”

Her mother, who was sound asleep, did not hear the fire alarm. She also did not hear the dog barking.

Two police officers, who were in the vicinity on their lunch break, saw the smoke in the air and followed it back to their home. They thought they heard loud screams.

“The dog had been barking really loud, so what they thought was screaming was actually Bleu, still trying to get my mom’s attention,” she added.

The officers smashed the door open, and were able to save Fox’s mother. The neighbors helped save two Chihuahuas, but Bleu did not make it.

“Our family dog passed away, but we’re super lucky,” Bleu continued. “Because if it wasn’t for Bleu, my mom probably wouldn’t have made it, because they wouldn’t have known she was in the house.”

“They basically said that if it wasn’t for her getting out in that moment, she would have passed away…” said Fox.

Fox created a GoFundMe page to help her family, especially her parents who had lived there for 30 years, move forward after the fire.

“My mom barely got out and didn’t even have a pair of shoes on. We miss Bleu dearly! He was loved just as much as a family member.. Thought of as a kid to the family. We are looking for any donations that can help bring some relief to my family and two siblings that have lost everything,” Fox wrote on the GoFundMe page.

The page has so far raised more than $12,000 of its $15,000 goal.
