Pet Dog Mauls 14-Year-Old Boy To Death, Police Kill 'Extremely Aggressive' Canine
In a horrific incident, a 14-year-old boy was attacked and killed by his family dog in Minnesota.
The victim was identified as Dion Bush. According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place in the family's farm where they raised German Shepherds.
“The father was incapacitated with a medical injury so he wasn’t able to take care of the dogs himself,” Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Lt. Keith Van Dyke told the Pioneer Journal.
Authorities said that the boy went to look after the dogs on the day of the attack. When the teenager did not return for hours, his father called for him. The man then informed authorities about his missing son.
“Due to a recent injury, the father was unable, he wasn’t mobile, so he wasn’t able to go and search on his own,” Otter Tail County Sheriff Barry Fitzgibbons told Valley News Live.
Deputies arrived at the scene and found the boy mauled to death. The 3-year-old German Shepherd was “extremely aggressive” toward them, police said, adding they killed the canine at the family's request.
The family believed the dog, which was purchased from Poland six months ago, posed a risk to the public due to its behavior.
Dyke said they have sent the dog's body for a necropsy at the North Dakota State University to determine why the canine became aggressive and attacked the teenager. The Otter Tail County coroner’s office is also investigating the incident.
The teenager studied at the Battle Lake School, local reports said, adding the school will be holding a memorial for the victim.
Last month, a 13-year-old girl was attacked by pit bulls while she was taking out trash in her neighborhood in Chicago. According to reports, the girl was in an alley next to her home when the pit bulls came through a garage and mauled the girl.
The owner of the dogs, who came out of his house after hearing the girl scream, shot the canines.
The girl was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where she received treatment for lacerations to her ear and both legs.
