A pet dog was shot dead by an animal control officer in front of a heartbroken eight-year-old girl in Taraz, Kazakhstan, on Thursday.

The girl, identified as Shynali Risbibi, left home for school when her pet, a one-year-old spaniel named Barsik, accompanied her outside. Moments after the two left their home, the worker shot the canine in the neck with a poison dart.

CCTV footage of the incident showed the girl stroking the dog and watching it helplessly as it takes its last breathes. Moments later, the animal control officer approaches them and takes away the canine as the heartbroken girl rushes home to seek help.

Speaking to local media, the girl’s mother said, “My daughter ran home in tears. She was shaking and barely could speak. After we realized what happened, my husband and I ran outside and found that man. After a huge quarrel, the worker opened his van and showed us Barsik. He was lying in there, dead, among other canine corpses.”

“Shynali cried the whole day. We did not dare to tell her what we saw in the van. Now we are looking for a black Spaniel to adopt,” she added.

Anuarbek Kaltaev, the head of Animal Control said, “The worker was reprimanded for carrying the air rifle in front of the child. The case is going to be investigated by the specialists of our unit. The worker will be fired if found guilty.”

Meanwhile, calling Barsik “an amazingly smart dog,” a neighbor said, “He would accompany Shynali to school and back home after classes. He would lay on the ground near the girl’s feet making her wait for the green light at the intersection. He never barked at anyone. Was very affectionate and friendly. Everybody in our neighbourhood knew him and liked.”
