Pet Food Recall 2021: Deadly Dog, Cat Food Kills 80 Animals In Latest Recall

After issuing a recall on Dec. 30 after 28 dog deaths, Midwestern Pet Foods is expanding its pet food recall to include all dog and cat foods made with corn products because they may contain mold toxin aflatoxin in levels that are higher than the acceptable daily limits set by the Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA has started an investigation into the source of aflatoxin poisoning at Midwestern Pet Foods, which at high levels can cause illness and death in pets. To date, there have been 70 reports of pets dying from eating the food and 80 pet illnesses related to the product.

The recalled pet food was produced at Midwestern Pet Foods’ Chickasha Operations Facility in Oklahoma and distributed nationwide in retail stores and online.

Lot codes recalled can be found on the back of the bag of food in a three-line code.

The affected dog and cat foods cover all products that expire on or before July 9, 2022. Products with expiration dates after this date are not included in the recall, the company said.

Consumers are urged to stop feeding their pets the recalled food immediately. It also should not be fed to any other animal. The food should be destroyed so that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access it. All food bowls, cups, utensils, and storage containers that came in contact with the pet food should be sanitized.

Pets that have aflatoxin poisoning may have symptoms of sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice (yellowish tint to the eyes, gums, or skin due to liver damage), or diarrhea. If a pet displays these signs, they should be seen by a vet immediately. Pet owners should bring along the label from their pet food, including lot number and best-buy date.

Midwestern Pet Foods said it has not received any reports of human illnesses from the pet food. The company said it recalled the dog and cat food “out of an abundance of caution to help protect the health and safety of pets.”
